Hakluyt Society Editorial Workshop, London, Friday 4 May 2018

The first one-day Hakluyt Society Editorial Workshop will take place on Friday 4 May at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London. There will be a range of contributions from scholars who are or have been involved with Hakluyt Society published volumes, including substantial talks from Professor Michael Brennan, Dr Angela Byrne and Professor Joyce Lorimer. The aims of the workshop are to encourage interest in the academic editing of texts for publication and to offer practical support and advice to those engaged on editing projects. In memoriam: Dr Ian Jackson (1935-2017)

Ian Jackson was born in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1935 and studied geography at London and McGill Universities. His career had an unusual range, as he worked for institutions as varied as the Canadian International Geophysical Year, the London School of Economics, the Government of Canada and the United Nations (serving in Geneva and in New York). 2015 Hakluyt Society Essay Prize

First, some words about the 2015 prize run. This year the prize committee consisted of Daniel Carey, Surekha Davies (Chair), Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Peter Hulme, Claire Jowitt and Suzanne Schwartz. They announced the results during the 169th Annual General Meeting of the Hakluyt Society, which took place in London on Wednesday 26 June 2015. Among a number of high-quality submissions, the committee held the opinion that the single outstanding contribution was the essay by Owain Lawson (Columbia University), entitled: ‘Constructing a Green Museum: French Environmental Imaginaries of Syria and Lebanon’. On Hakluyt Society business: Sarah Tyacke in California

On a research visit to the Huntington Library, past president Sarah Tyacke met Professor Emeritus (UCLA) Norman Thrower now aged 96 at his home in Pacific Palisades. He is a long time member of the Society and of the American Friends of the Hakluyt Society, and was the editor of The Three Voyages of Edmond Halley in the Paramore, 1698-1701 published in 1981. He is in good health and remembers his editorship of the Hakluyt Society volumes with some pride.
